Language Arts and other disciplines
While we value creativity as an essential part of children's leaning, we also have a strong emphasis on Phonics, Reading and Writing which form the basis of a child's literary skills.
Children, in their daily interactions, are required to communicate, whether it is with their peers, or with adults. Communication can be verbal or non-verbal, complex or simple. Through creative play, children learn how to function in the environment around them; they try and communicate their ideas, feelings, and emotions. They re-enact the past, imagine the future, emulate adult behavior, which includes 'speaking', 'reading' and 'writing', long before they have actually acquired these skills. Language-learning takes place whenever language is used around children. They do this by progressively adapting the input they receive to their own linguistic and cognitive abilities.
Mahjabeen and Sabina are the Language Arts teachers. Sabina is a Reading Specialist and Therapeutic Tutor by profession, and has been in the field for almost 20 years. She is certified by the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators, and uses the Orton-Gillingham Approach to teach individuals reading, spelling, and writing. Mahjabeen is a certified Montessori directress from AMI Karachi. She has been in the teaching profession for more than 20 years now. Most of her interactions have been with children between the ages of 2.5 and 5 years. She has worked as an Academic Coordinator in various schools across Karachi and Canada. Through the individual attention that each child receives from these specialists, they are able to master the art of fluent reading and comprehension.
While Civitas is a great proponent of experiential learning, and places immense value on relationships, and human values, it gives equal importance to equipping children with the skill-set necessary to meet academic challenges. Along with the core subjects, English, Math and Urdu, children are introduced to a variety of disciplines such as Astronomy, Gardening, Environmental Studies, History, Geography, Science and Islamiyat. These have been carefully selected with a view to increase their general and civic knowledge, as well as develop critical thinking and analytical skills.
